Bent Vessby vas a MD in 1966, PhD in 1976. Associate Professor in Internal Medicine in 1977 at the University of Uppsala (Sweden). Since 1966, clinical positions mainly in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. 1970-1972, Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (Oklahoma City, USA). 1976-1990, Assistant Professor of the Geriatrics Department in the Uppsala University. 1990-2006, Adjunct Professor in Clinical Nutrition Research and Head of the Unit for Clinical Nutrition Research at the Uppsala University and Chief Physician at the Unit for Metabolic Diseases at the Uppsala University Hospital.
He has participated in teaching on undergraduate as well as graduate and postgraduate levels. His clinical work has mainly focused on metabolic diseases, risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. The research has been oriented towards fatty acid, lipoprotein and carbohydrate metabolism and the influence of diet in the development of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and diabetes in humans.
He has been author and coauthor of over 300 papers published in peer-reviewed journals, and participated in writing textbooks and educational material concerning human nutrition, lipid disorders, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
He is past member of the executive committee of ISSFAL, past member of the executive committee and Chairman (1998-2001) of the DSNG member and past Chairman of the Committee for Nutritional Sciences of the Royal Swedish Academy of Science and advisor for the National Food Administration in Sweden. He is honorary member of the Finnish Nutrition Society and of the DNSG. He was appointed Honorary Doctor at the Swedish Agricultural University in 2008.
2009 Prof. Jim Mann (New Zealand)

Jim Mann has been Professor in Human Nutrition and Medicine at the University of Otago and Consultant Physician (Endocrinology) in Dunedin Hospital for the past 23 years. For the preceding 15 years he lectured at the University of Oxford and worked as a Physician in the Radcliffe Infirmary. He is also the Director of the Edgar National Centre for Diabetes and Obesity Research and the World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Human Nutrition. His research and clinical work have principally been in the fields of lipids and carbohydrates as they relate to diabetes and coronary heart disease and in the field of obesity. He is a principal investigator for the Riddet Institute, a national Centre of Research Excellence at Massey University, Palmerston North.
He has been author and coauthor of over 300 papers published in peer reviewed journals and written and edited several textbooks and popular books, most recently the “Essentials of Human Nutrition” the 4th Edition having been published by Oxford University Press in January 2012. He has been involved with national and international government and nongovernmental organisations (including IDF, EASD, IUNS, WHO, and WCRF) in guideline development relating to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and nutrition.
As Principal Investigator he was awarded the international Bristol-Myers Squibb/Mead Johnson Unrestricted Grant for Human Nutrition, was the third recipient of the University of Otago Distinguished Research Medal in 2002 and in 2004 he received the Sir Charles Hercus Medal of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Medicine in 2003. He was also awarded the Distinguished Researcher Award from the Dunedin School of Medicine for 2005.
